La Shark, the most entertaining requin.
Pour mon premier concert londonien, j'ai rendez-vous à Amersham Arms, du côté de New Cross. L'endroit n'est pas charmeur, il fait -12°C (au moins), et le concert ne commence que dans une heure. Tout va bien.
Je prend possession des lieux, et surtout, prend mon mal en patience. Quelques minutes (et verres) plus tard, La Shark monte enfin sur scène. La quoi ?
Pour une description objective, je demande tout simplement aux cinq garçons de se présenter : «argumentative pop music, fast slow jamz.... Half-arsed motown meets GCSE drama. Niveau influences, je pense qu'on a adulé beaucoup trop de groupes ! Ben, par exemple, avait l'habitude de porter un tee-shirt Iron Maiden, et il était sérieux. Lewis et moi avons une tradition appelée "poisson et post punk" : on écoute un nouveau groupe post punk et on cuisine un poisson qu'on a jamais cuisiné auparavant. On a aussi pensé à faire des soirées taekwondo/hiphop ! »
En gros, quelque chose d'un peu fou à écouter, et à voir. Car oui, pour la Shark, ce n'est pas une qu'un simple concert, c'est un petit spectacle.
J'ai toujours su que les anglais avaient ce petit grain de folie que les français n'ont pas. Pas de retenue, ni gêne, juste l'envie de s'amuser. Le concert me confirmera cette pensée : le chanteur fait monter quelqu'un du public sur scène, et tous les deux simulent une bagarre. «Ca n'arrive pas souvent, mais la prochaine fois, ce sera un vrai combat. Là c'était plus une valse érotique entre homos, ce qui ne me dérange pas, mais on est des modèles, et les gens pensent qu'on est des gars durs, alors faut qu'on soit en accord avec ça.»
Plus les minutes passent, plus je suis étonnée. Après avoir fait un petit tour dans le public, le chanteur entame une chanson en français ! L'accent est parfait, j'ai l'impression d'être à la maison.
- Une de vos chansons s'appelle Amie Française, et votre slogan est en français lui aussi ("Pour Homme, Pour Femme"). Êtes-vous amoureux de la France?
«Dans un sens, oui! C'est une langue fantastique, même si j'écris très mal. Une langue brillante à chanter. Ma mère est française, et elle me chantait des berceuses en français ! »
Le concert se termine par un rappel, amplement mérité. Je rencontre Ben, qui m'en dit un peu plus sur leurs projets.
«Nous partons en tournée au Brésil ! C'est une incroyable opportunité pour nous d'ouvrir nos yeux sur le merveilleux monde qui nous entoure. Être témoins des miracles du monde est très important pour notre musique ! Nous avons été chanceux d'avoir une certaines relation musicale avec "Cibelle" (la reine de l'exotisme brézilien) et c'est ainsi que nous pouvons faire des concerts là-bas.»
For my first gig in London, I'm going to Amersham Arms, in New Cross. The area isn't attractive, I'm freezing (-12°C, at least), and the gig is starting in an hour. Everything's fine.
A few minutes (and a few drinks) later, La Shark comes up on stage. La what ?

I reckon we have worshipped far to many bands ! Ben used to wear Iron Maiden t shirts- in a "non" ironic way. Me and lewis have been doing 'fish and post punk' : every week we listen to a new post punk band and cook and prepare a fish we have never tried. There has been talk of starting up taekwondo and hiphop/soul nights ! »
Basically, something a little crazy to listen to, and to see. Because, yes, for La Shark, this is not just a simple gig, it's a little show.
I always knew that British people were a little more crazier than French people. No restraint, no embarrassment, just the urge of having fun. The gig will confirm this thought : the singer asks someone to come on stage, and pretend a fight. «That doesn't often happen, but next time it has to be a real fight. It was more of a homoerotic waltz, which i'm cool with, but we are role models and people think we are really hard bastards, and we have lo live up to that.»
The more the gig goes on, the more I'm impressed. After a little walk in the audience, the singer starts singing in French! The accent is perfect, it feels just like home.
- One of your songs is called Amie française, and your slogan is in french aswell ("Pour Homme, Pour Femme"). Are you in love with France ?
«In a sense! C'est une langue fantastique! Meme sie j'ecrit tres mal. A brilliant language to sing in. I have a french mother and she sung me french lullabies ! »
The gig ends with an "encore", well deserved. I meet Ben, who tells me a bit more about their future projects.
«We're going to Brazil ! It's an excellent opportunity for us to open our eyes to the wonderful world around us. Seeing the miracles of the world is important to our music! We have been lucky enough to have a musical love affair with the brazilian queen of exotica "Cibelle'" and that is how the concerts were offered to us.»
For a first gig in London, I couldn't have asked for a better one : a British promising band, and a great night. So great that the singer will take off his t-shirt. «That was done as a homage to Sylvester Stalone, the gig was the 25th anniversary of the first Rocky film.» Let's celebrate then !
Felix White from The Maccabees will close the party with a brilliant DJ set.
