Rencontre avec Dems.
____ Aller à un concert en avance a plusieurs avantages : on se retrouve facilement au premier rang, on peut boire plus de verres (oui, c'est un avantage), mais surtout, on peut découvrir de nouveaux groupes en première partie.
____ Il y a quelques semaines, mon amie Ilaria et moi sommes aller voir Is Tropical, groupe que j'affectionne depuis quelques années maintenant. Evidemment, j'ai été bluffée. Mais le concert se terminera par une pensée, "Waouh, le premier groupe était époustouflant". Rencontre avec ceux qui ont marqué ma soirée : Dems.
____ Dems est formé de trois amis : David, Duncan et Dan. Camarades de classe, puis colocataires à Edinburgh, le groupe s'est formé en mars, où les 'vrais' concerts ont commencé.
Pouvez-vous me parler de vos influences?
____ En tant que passionnés de musique, nous avons des goûts très variés : garage, indie, soul, drum & bass. Mais nous avons quelques groupes en commun : The Postal Service, Prince, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Bloc Party et DJ Shadow.
Comment s'est passé l'enregistrement de votre EP?
____ Les chansons de l'EP représentent exactement la façon dont nous voulions nous présenter au public. Le premier titre 'House' (également nom de l'EP) a beaucoup évolué depuis que nous avons commencé les lives. 'Down On You', chanson plus calme, est le tout premier morceau que nous avons composé. Nous avons tout enregistré dans la chambre de David.
____ Avec une formation en mars dernier, le groupe est clairement considéré comme 'nouveau'. Néanmoins, ces derniers mois ont bien été remplis : une demo jouée sur les ondes de Radio 1 (en d'autres termes, plus grande radio anglaise), un EP disponible en Novembre (que vous pouvez pré-commander via Rough Trade), et bien sur, la première partie de Is Tropical.
____ "Nick, notre tourneur, nous a proposé de jouer avec Is Tropical. Evidemment, nous avons accepté! Nous adorons leur musique, c'était donc une grande opportunité d'ouvrir un sold-out concert pour eux!"
En tant que 'nouveau' groupe, trouvez-vous difficile de vous faire une place dans l'industrie du disque?
____ Nous avons été très chanceux de collaborer avec Russell, Pete et David qui gèrent Bad Life. De plus, notre manager Jen nous aide vraiment à nous concentrer sur notre créativité. Nous existons seulement depuis quelques mois, et pourtant notre EP a déjà été joué par de grands présentateurs radio comme Pete Tong, Rod Da Bank sur Radio 1, et Eddy Temple Morris sur XFM. Que demander de mieux!
Vous sentez-vous en compétition avec tous ces groupes émergents?
____ Plus de groupes rime avec plus de musique. Il y a suffisamment de place dans la musique pour que chacun s'exprime. Nous adorons rencontrer les groupes avec qui nous partageons la scène. La musique est un monde rempli de bonnes personnalités.
____ Petit à petit, Dems réussi à se hisser au top des 'groupes à suivre'. Et si vous ne leur laisser pas une chance de vous séduire, ils vous 'pourchasseront'!
Ils joueront à Edinburgh le 28 Novembre, ainsi que Camden le 1er Décembre.

____ Going to a gig in advance does have several advantages : you easily end up in the front row, you can drink a bit more (yes, it clearly is an advantage), but most importantly, you watch the supportive bands.
____ A few weeks ago, my friend Ilaria and I went to see Is Tropical, a band that I've been loving for a few years now. Of course, they blew me away. But the concert will conclude with one thought, "Wow, the first band was amazing." Interview with those who have marked my evening, Dems.
____ Dems are three friends : David, Duncan and Dan. Dan and Duncan used to be flatmates in Edinburgh, while David and Dan used to go to college together. They properly formed in March to build a live show around the music they had been making and to develop material.
Can you tell me more about your influences?
____ We're all music lovers, so we have open eclectic tastes to bring together. Between us, we're huge fans of garage, indie, soul, d&b - most things really. A few artists we could all agree on would include The Postal Service, Prince, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Bloc Party and DJ Shadow.
How did the recording of your Ep go?
____ The songs on the House EP are how we wanted to formally introduce ourselves to people. The lead track of the same name developed as we refined our live set, while 'Down On You', a more downbeat record, was the first original piece we came up with together. We recorded and produced it all in David's bedroom.
____ Because of its recent formation, the band is clearly considered as 'new'. Nevertheless, the past few months have been busy : a demo played on Radio 1, an EP out in November (you can pre-order it via Rough Trade), and, obviously, a gig with Is Tropical.
____ "Nick, who books gigs for us, just emailed asking if we'd like to play with Is Tropical. Obviously we did! We love their music, so it was a massive buzz playing a sell out gig with them."
As a 'new' band, do you find it difficult to enter into the music industry?
____ We've been fortunate in that Russell, Pete and David who run Bad Life really get us, so this first release has been a pleasure rather than a struggle from day one. Also, our manager Jen makes it very easy for us to focus on the creative side of things. We've only been together for a matter of months rather than years and our new record has been played on shows like Pete Tong, Rob Da Bank and Jaymo & Andy George on BBC Radio 1 and Eddy Temple Morris on XFM, so we couldn't have asked for much more!
Lots of bands are emerging at the moment. Do you feel any pressure?
____ More bands means more music. There's enough room around here for anyone doing something vital or different. We've loved getting to know bands we've played with recently - music's full of wonderful people.
____ Gradually, Dems are managing to get to the top of the 'bands to watch' podium. And if you don't give them a proper listen, they will 'hunt you down' !
They'll be playing Edinburgh on November 28th, and Camden on December 1st.
